Alex has big dreams of getting out of the mill and having a better life. She has a group of friends who she hangs out with regularly at a local bar called Mawby's. The bar hosts nightly cabaret sessions where non-professional dancers can try their luck at performing. Alex has always dreamed of being a professional dancer, but has no educational background to get into a school. One night Alex decides to try her hand at dancing at the bar and is met with approval and applause.

From that time on she spends a great deal of her spare time in her loft apartment practicing new routines which will make her dance performance even better. She becomes a regular dancer at the bar while still holding her job at the steel mill. In the same town there is another club which features dancers who do strip routines.
