Club member Ken Bowring, from Cardiff, celebrated St David’s Day with a quick four-fish 10.5lb bag while Bridgend day ticket visitor Roger Newton landed and returned a 6.5lb brown trout. Catch and release anglers have found plenty of action. Chris Hillier, Huw Williams, Bob Jones and Keith Tanner all hooked and returned 10 rainbows while Pete Davies and Mike Matthews each put back eight fish. The quality of the fishing can be judged by biting cold Sunday when, despite the line freezing in the rod rings, the 18 anglers who braved the weather accounted for 49 trout. Ynysyfro Reservoir 33 THE new season got off to a cracking start with catch and release anglers hooking a large number of fish during the first two days reserved for Newport Reservoirs Fly Fishing Association members.

Cardiff member Keith Higgins was one of a number catching and returning around 20 fish while two other Cardiff anglers, Bob Bradley and Alan Rees, returned 12 and seven fish averaging 1.75lb. A rainbow of 4lb 6oz was the first contender for the cup for the biggest trout in the first two days; but Newport member Brian Wareham beat that with a late rainbow that turned the scales to 4lb 10oz. Ravensnest Fishery 64 FREEZING conditions reduced the number of anglers, but when it was possible to free the line from ice and cast a fly the trout were waiting. Colin Davies, from Cardiff, caught the week’s best fish; which was a 5.75lb rainbow with a weakness for a fritz pattern fly. Brian Williams, from Pontypool, caught a 5.25lb rainbow and Rhondda angler John Rees had one of 5lb. A 4. Colorvision Spyder 2 Software. 25lb rainbow helped Ian Henry to a six fish 16.5lb bag while fellow Cardiff fly fisherman Howard Phillips took a six fish 15.5lb catch.
Dave Richards took five rainbows totalling 13.5lb and Cardiff’s John Cassidy had the top catch and release score with 20 rainbows to 4lb. Brian Jones returned 17 fish and Stuart Davies, David Parry and Philip Walters all put back 16 rainbows. Seven Oaks Fishery 74 THE top trout was a fine 12.5lb rainbow landed by Keith Smith, from Bridgend.
Rees Morgan, from Pontypridd, caught a 7.75lb rainbow and Pontyclun 14-year-old Jamie Thomas accounted for one that weighed 7lb. Gerry Roberts went back to Caerphilly with rainbows of 6lb and 4.5lb in his bag while Cardiff visitor Jason Collins was fishing catch and release when he hooked nine rainbows to 6lb. Steve Rees and Nathan Davies came from Tonyrefail, fished catch and release and caught six fish to 5lb and seven to 4lb. Shimano Big Fish Water 84 THE icy east wind made fishing difficult and most trout caught fell for lures fished down in the water.
Tony Roberts tied on a viva lure to tempt a 12lb rainbow, one of 8.25lb and two more for a 36.25lb total. A rainbow of 11.5lb was the best of four weighing 30.25lb caught by Simon Gust; Roy Packer paid a regular visit from Gilwern and caught four fish to 9.5lb on a cat’s whisker lure and Mark Whally’s catch was one 8lb trout and two between 5lb and 6lb. The lake is closed tomorrow and Saturday for the annual One-Fly Competition, but open as normal on Sunday. Big Well Fly Fishery 04 A COLD day didn’t stop 11-year-old Ben Burroughs putting together a three fish 7lb bag and outfishing dad Phil who banked one 2.25lb rainbow. Ben Yeoman made 7.5lb with his three fish; Newport angler Jason Tulley did slightly better with three weighing 7.75lb and publican John Rix caught five fish for his 14lb bag. Ray Brooks, from Caldicot, fished catch and release and hooked eight rainbows to 3lb and Cardiff’s Dan Brown and Ken Hardy both put back seven fish.
Llandegfedd Reservoir 22 CARDIFF Reservoirs Fly Fishing Club members Dave Bond and Dave Pockett shared a boat to practice for the club competition there at the weekend and Bond boated five fish while Pockett had four; but he included a 7.5lb rainbow which is the best caught so far. On competition day things were tougher, but Dave Bond proved that practice makes perfect by catching two fish to win the Jack Jones Cup and Committee Shield with 5lb 4oz. Chris Trace had three smaller fish for 5lb 1oz and second place while Robert Ford came third with a 4lb brace. The next club fixture is for the Phoenix Cup at Woolaston Court on Sunday, March 21.
Cefn Mably Lakes 01 CARDIFF anglers have been getting the lion’s share of the fish with Alan Hill bagging four for 12.5lb with a black buzzer, Roger Edwards catching four weighing 12lb on a cat’s whisker and Timmy James five for a total weight of 15.75lb on a white and green lure. Newport anglers also got in on the act with Richard Meeks casting an orange fritz lure to hook four rainbows totalling 11.5lb and Paul Rees netting a 10.75lb rainbow trio.
