I installed Windows 8 over an existing partition with Windows 7 and sql 2005. SQL 2005 appeared to run just fine after the upgrade. Then I tried a new install of Windows 8 and sql2005 will not install on it. I think the lack of support for installing sql 2005 may be a Microsoft decision to force upgrades. I upgraded my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 to Windows 8 Pro x64 with SQL EXPRESS 2005 installed in Windows 7. After the upgrade the SQL EXPRESS 2005 runs fine, no issue I can notice.
